South Korean cities launch initiatives to promote pet etiquette and care

Local governments in South Korea are launching initiatives to promote responsible pet ownership and improve pet culture.

Busan Metropolitan City has announced the ‘2026 Busan Metropolitan City Pet Photo Contest’ to encourage ‘petiquette’—the etiquette practiced by pet owners. The contest invites residents with registered pets to submit photos showing them practicing proper etiquette during walks or outings. Submissions are accepted from August 24 to September 7, with a total prize pool of 2.7 million won. Winning works will be exhibited in October during the ‘2026 With Pet Star’ event.

In Seoul, Seongdong-gu is organizing a series of ‘Pet Culture Special Lectures’ throughout September. The program offers practical training in three key areas: emergency first aid for pets, smartphone photography techniques for capturing pet moments, and home grooming methods such as nail and ear care. These sessions are designed to provide pet owners with essential skills for daily care and to foster a harmonious coexistence between humans and animals.
