South Korean cities launch safety nets to prevent youth suicide

South Korean municipalities Gyeryong and Uijeongbu have launched regional safety net councils to address rising youth suicide and self-harm rates. These initiatives aim to establish a collaborative response system involving local governments, education offices, and mental health organizations.

In Gyeryong, the first council meeting included representatives from the Nonsan-Gyeryong Office of Education, the Wee Center, and various mental health and counseling centers. The group focused on sharing resources, establishing emergency contact networks, and managing the reintegration of students into schools following medical treatment.

Similarly, Uijeongbu held its inaugural council to strengthen cooperation between health centers, education offices, and suicide prevention centers. Officials emphasized that because youth suicide is driven by complex personal and social factors, a unified approach across education, counseling, and health sectors is essential for early detection and timely intervention.
