South Korean civil servant charged with retaliatory murder of wife
Police in South Korea have upgraded murder charges to retaliatory murder against a male civil servant in his 30s who killed his wife in Gwangju. The suspect allegedly tracked his wife to her hiding place after receiving divorce papers.
The victim had been seeking refuge from her husband's habitual domestic violence and was in the process of a divorce lawsuit. The suspect reportedly stated he acted out of resentment, fearing unfavorable outcomes regarding alimony, property division, and child custody.
In addition to retaliatory murder, the suspect faces charges including violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Specific Crimes, violation of temporary protection orders, and emotional child abuse, as the crime occurred in front of their 5-year-old daughter. While there were initial reports of physical injury to the child, medical examinations by the Sunflower Center found no physical wounds.
The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency plans to transfer the suspect to the prosecution on September 9th.
