South Korean construction firms report divergent financial trends

South Korean construction companies are experiencing contrasting financial trajectories. POSCO E&C is nearing a major milestone, with cumulative urban redevelopment orders reaching 4.98 trillion won. Despite a slow first half of the year, the company secured significant contracts in the second half, including a 1.56 trillion won reconstruction project in Gwangmyeong. POSCO E&C has currently achieved approximately 80% of its annual 6.2 trillion won target.

In contrast, GS Engineering & Construction (GS E&C) is facing renewed financial pressure. The company reported a 97.4% drop in operating profit for the first half of the year compared to the previous period. Challenges include capital impairment in its Vietnamese manufacturing subsidiaries, significant investment losses in new business sectors such as battery recycling, and losses from its UK-based modular construction subsidiary, which has entered liquidation proceedings. These issues stem from previous investments and ongoing project financing burdens.
