South Korean construction stocks rise on U.S. energy project expectations

South Korean construction stocks have seen a significant surge, driven by expectations of major energy infrastructure projects in the United States. The KRX Construction Index rose 10.28% over a recent week, outperforming the KOSPI and KOSDAQ indices.

Investors are reacting to potential participation in a $350 billion investment framework between South Korea and the U.S. Key projects under discussion include the construction of the Encinall gas-fired combined cycle power plant in Texas, valued at approximately $22.3 billion, and a proposal for the construction of eight large-scale nuclear power plants involving roughly $120 billion.

Market analysts suggest that as South Korea invests directly in U.S. power infrastructure, Korean companies are expected to lead the supply chain. Potential beneficiaries include companies such as KEPCO E&C, DL E&C, Samsung E&A, Daewoo E&C, and Hyundai E&C. However, experts note that actual profitability and the specific nature of contract structures—such as whether Korean firms act as lead or non-lead EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) partners—will be critical factors for future stock performance.
