South Korean court sentences man to life for revenge killing of Chinese woman

A 30‑year‑old man was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Suwon District Court for the murder of a Chinese woman in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. The court also imposed a ten‑year employment ban in child‑youth and disability agencies, a 20‑year personal‑information registration, and five years of probation, while rejecting the prosecutor’s request for an electronic monitoring device.

Investigators found the victim had reported the perpetrator for a sexual‑assault offense earlier that year. In retaliation, he filed false insurance lawsuits to obtain her address, attached a tracking device to her car, and used the information to locate and stab her multiple times in an underground parking garage. He fled to Hongcheon, Gangwon Province, but was captured about 30 hours later.

Prosecutors had previously sought the death penalty, citing the premeditated nature of the crime and the abuse of legal procedures to facilitate the murder.
