South Korean court upholds 10‑year prison for repeat murderer, retains electronic monitoring

A 50‑year‑old man with a prior murder conviction was sentenced to ten years in prison by the Daejeon High Court, which also maintained a ten‑year order for electronic tracking. The court rejected his appeal against the original verdict, finding the sentence appropriate given his history of violent offenses, including a 2008 killing for which he served 12 years. The judge noted the high risk of reoffending and ordered the continued use of a location‑tracking device.

The ruling also addressed additional charges of embezzlement related to a luxury car rental. The defendant had attempted to claim the electronic monitoring order was excessively harsh, but the appellate court affirmed both the prison term and the monitoring requirement.
