South Korean court upholds prison sentence for fatal assault
A man in his 50s has had his prison sentence upheld by an appellate court after assaulting a drunk individual who was verbally abusing his wife. The Daejeon High Court dismissed the appeal of the 52-year-old defendant, maintaining the original sentence of 18 months in prison for assault resulting in death.
The incident occurred in May 2024 in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, when the defendant struck the victim following verbal insults directed at his wife. Although the victim was advised to seek medical attention at an emergency room, he returned home and was found dead the following morning. The court noted that while the assault was impulsive, the defendant had failed to take measures to compensate the victim's family.
