South Korean courts impose prison terms in sexual assault and attempted child murder cases

The Busan High Court's Changwon branch upheld a two‑year prison sentence for a 70‑year‑old village head in Goseong, South Korea, who sexually assaulted an 80‑year‑old woman with dementia at her home. The court also maintained a three‑year ban on employment in child, youth and disability sectors and ordered the perpetrator to complete a 40‑hour sexual‑violence treatment program.

In Daejeon, a 30‑year‑old husband and wife received three‑year prison sentences, suspended for five years, after being convicted of attempting to murder their elementary‑school daughter and of a joint suicide attempt. The court cited severe financial hardship and depression as aggravating factors and imposed additional conditions, including a 40‑hour child‑abuse prevention lecture, probation and other supervisory measures.
