South Korean courts issue prison sentences for public disturbance incidents

South Korean courts have handed down prison sentences to two men in their 50s for separate incidents involving public disturbance and intimidation.

A man in his 50s was sentenced to four months in prison by the Changwon District Court for possessing a weapon in a public place. The defendant, who had a prior narcotics record, reportedly consumed an excessive amount of Zolpidem before sharpening a weapon on the ground in front of a convenience store in Gimhae, Gyeongnam Province. He also caused alarm by leaving the weapon on a freezer inside the store while making purchases. The court noted that while the drug use may have influenced his behavior, his actions caused significant public fear.

In a separate case, the Chuncheon District Court overturned an acquittal to sentence a man in his 50s to eight months in prison for special intimidation. The defendant had driven his vehicle into the entrance of a mart in Pyeongchang, causing fear among employees and customers. Although the defendant claimed he was merely checking if the store was open, the appellate court ruled that his actions were sufficient to instill terror in the victims, who testified to feeling a threat to their lives.
