South Korean courts issue sentences in two separate violent crimes

In a ruling by the Supreme Court of South Korea, a man in his 40s was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder of his 14-year-old daughter. The incident occurred in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, in October last year, after an argument regarding the child's interaction with her younger sibling. The court noted the extreme cruelty of the crime, where the perpetrator struck the victim repeatedly with a blunt object. While the initial court sentence was lower due to the defendant's confession, the appellate court increased the term, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court.

In a separate incident in Jeju, a man in his 60s is receiving intensive care after consuming pesticide prior to his arrest for the murder of a 40-year-old woman. The victim, a former partner of the suspect, had reported him for stalking and sexual violence on four separate occasions between October last year and May of this year. Police released the suspect from custody to allow for medical treatment but plan to re-arrest him once he is discharged from the hospital to seek an arrest warrant.
