South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Kyu-baek to step down

South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Kyu-baek is set to step down after approximately one year in office, following the nomination of Kang Shin-cheol, the current Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, as his successor. Ahn, the first civilian to hold the position in 64 years, has been a key figure in driving defense reforms, including the integration of military academies and the transfer of wartime operational control.

During a National Assembly budget committee meeting, Ahn addressed long-standing allegations regarding his military service, specifically claims of desertion and detention during his time as a short-term soldier. While he previously denied these claims, he stated that because an investigation is ongoing, he could not provide a definitive answer at the moment, noting that the truth “will be revealed soon.”

The Ministry of National Defense has begun forming a task force to prepare for Kang Shin-cheol’s upcoming confirmation hearings. Ahn expressed his intention to complete his duties and hand over his responsibilities before returning to his legislative role in the National Assembly.
