South Korean dementia public guardianship programs receive national excellence awards

Participants in the 2026 Dementia Public Guardianship Excellence Case Presentation Contest, hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Central Dementia Center, have been recognized for their dedicated support of elderly individuals living with dementia.

Gil Myeong-sun, a public guardian from Icheon-si, received a Meritorious Service Award. Since June 2022, Gil has provided legal representation and daily life support for a solitary elderly person with dementia. Her efforts included managing basic pensions, coordinating with dementia care centers to reduce debts, and facilitating cognitive rehabilitation through regular visits. Her support helped the individual regain some independence in personal hygiene.

The Danyang-gun Dementia Care Center was awarded an Excellence Award in the institutional category. The center was recognized for its work with a 71-year-old illiterate individual living alone. Despite challenges such as the resignation of a previous guardian and the patient's accidents, the center provided continuous medical and administrative assistance, ensuring care remained uninterrupted even after the individual's passing.
