South Korean Democratic Party to decide on crypto tax delay
The Democratic Party of Korea is expected to reach a decision within one to two weeks regarding whether to implement or further delay the taxation of virtual assets, which is currently scheduled to begin in January next year.
During a meeting with representatives from five major domestic cryptocurrency exchanges, lawmakers discussed the potential costs of market uncertainty. While some members emphasized the principle that income should be taxed, others noted that insufficient taxation infrastructure, such as difficulties in tracking transactions between individuals and overseas exchanges, could lead to unfair enforcement.
Industry representatives requested a delay, citing the early stage of the digital asset industry and the need for better regulatory frameworks. Concerns were also raised regarding the potential for domestic capital to migrate to overseas exchanges and the impact on asset formation for the younger generation. The party aims to finalize its position quickly to align with the upcoming tax law amendment schedule.
