South Korean Deputy Prime Minister discusses crypto taxation and housing supply

During a National Assembly audit on October 22, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Lee Hyung-il addressed the ongoing debate regarding the implementation of virtual asset taxation. Responding to inquiries about potential delays, Lee stated that the government will “deliberate as much as possible” after gathering opinions from experts, industry stakeholders, and the National Assembly.

Regarding the housing market, Lee acknowledged current difficulties in supply, noting that while leading indicators like permits and construction starts are rising, a significant increase in actual move-in volume is not expected until after 2028. To stabilize the rental market, the government is focusing on expanding long-term public rental housing.

Additionally, Lee mentioned that South Korea is reviewing the commercial viability of the Alaska LNG project to ensure mutually beneficial investment outcomes.
