South Korean economic agencies face national audits amid IMF outlook release

South Korea faces a busy economic week featuring several major institutional developments. Key economic agencies, including the Bank of Korea, the Fair Trade Commission, the National Tax Service, and the Korea Customs Service, are scheduled to undergo national audits. Notably, Bank of Korea Governor Shin Hyun-song will appear for his first audit, where discussions are expected to focus on interest rate hikes, inflation, housing market stability, and household debt.

On the international stage, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Lee Hyung-il will travel to Bangkok, Thailand, to attend the G20 and G7 finance ministers' meetings and the IMF/World Bank annual meetings. This marks his first multilateral economic diplomacy since taking office.

Global economic outlooks are also in focus as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is set to release its October World Economic Outlook and Fiscal Monitor reports. These reports will provide updated growth projections for South Korea and assessments of global fiscal conditions, including government debt levels and the impact of geopolitical tensions.

Domestically, the government will release September employment trends and recent economic assessments. Attention is directed toward whether employment in manufacturing and construction sectors has stabilized and the status of household debt, which may see a decrease in total balance for the first time this year.
