South Korean education budget cut precedes university application system failure
Following a recent failure in the university rolling admissions application system, it has been revealed that the Ministry of Education reduced the operating budget for the 'Standard Common Application System' by 34.4% compared to the previous year. The budget for the Korean Council for University Education (KCUE) dropped from 974 million won last year to 639 million won for the current period.
Representative Park Jung-hoon of the National Assembly's Education Committee noted that the Ministry failed to recognize that the private agency Uwayapply had updated its operating system and moved its data center prior to the application period. While Uwayapply attributed the system errors to bugs during a recent security update, the Ministry stated there are limits to directly supervising private agency systems. Critics have called for accountability, arguing the application system is a critical national infrastructure rather than a simple private program.
