South Korean director Yeon Sang‑ho released his new film The Ugly in cinemas on Wednesday 29 July. The movie adapts his own graphic‑novel Face and is set in Seoul during the country’s rapid 1970s economic growth.

The plot follows blind wood‑craft master Lim Yeong‑gyoo, whose wife Jeong Young‑hee vanished forty years earlier. When her skeleton is discovered, Lim’s son and a journalist investigate, exposing the social stigma attached to Jeong’s lifelong “ugliness” and broader themes of marginalisation, sexual abuse and early #MeToo‑type dynamics. The production was low‑budget, shot in roughly ten days with a very small crew, continuing Sang‑ho’s socially critical style seen in Train to Busan (2016) and Peninsula (2020).
