South Korean financial holdings hit record 17.6 trillion won profit

South Korean financial holding companies reported a record-breaking consolidated net profit of 17.6 trillion won for the first half of the year, a 13.7% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth was primarily driven by the financial investment sector, which saw a 72.8% surge in net profit due to a booming stock market and increased foreign exchange gains. In contrast, profits from the banking sector declined by 7.9%, shifting the profit structure away from traditional banking toward non-banking subsidiaries.

Despite the record profits, concerns regarding asset quality have emerged. The non-performing loan ratio rose to 1.03%, while the loan loss provision ratio dropped to 96.5%, falling below the 100% threshold. The Financial Supervisory Service has indicated it will strengthen monitoring of high-risk assets and internal controls.

Separately, data from the Bank of Korea shows a significant shift in capital circulation. Non-financial corporations saw their net fund management reach a record 67.1 trillion won, fueled by surging profits in the semiconductor industry, led by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Meanwhile, household net fund management decreased to 60.7 trillion won as consumers moved funds from savings accounts into stocks and investment funds, a phenomenon described as a ‘money move’.
