South Korean fire services warn of Chuseok holiday safety risks

South Korean fire service authorities in Chungnam and Gangwon provinces are issuing safety warnings ahead of the Chuseok holiday, as accidents involving lawn mowers and bee stings spike during traditional grave-tending activities.

In Chungnam, data from 2023 to 2025 shows that over 55% of lawn mower accidents and 56% of bee sting incidents occurred during August and September. The 60s age group was identified as the most vulnerable demographic for both types of injuries. Accidents frequently peak between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

In Gangwon, fire service reports indicate that between 2023 and August 2024, 488 emergency calls were made regarding these activities, resulting in 510 injuries. Bee stings accounted for 41.8% of cases, while lacerations and amputations from lawn mowers accounted for 38%.

Safety guidelines recommend inspecting equipment blades and protective covers before use, wearing protective gear such as goggles, gloves, and safety shoes, and clearing debris like stones or metal from the work area. To prevent bee stings, workers are advised to check for nests, avoid strong scents, and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing.
