South Korean firefighter dies in Bucheon factory fire
A firefighter died following a fire at a metal component coating factory in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, on October 16. The victim, a 40-year-old firefighter, was rescued in cardiac arrest but passed away the following day. Seven others were injured in the incident.
Investigations revealed that large quantities of flammable materials, including thinner, were stored improperly near metal cleaning workstations, violating safety regulations. Police have booked the factory owner in his 70s on charges of professional negligence resulting in death and injury.
The tragedy has highlighted systemic safety failures in Gyeonggi Province's industrial zones. Reports indicate that many small factories use highly flammable materials like sandwich panels and tents for illegal extensions, creating significant fire hazards. Furthermore, authorities face criticism for relying on voluntary self-inspections and issuing relatively weak penalties, such as fines of up to 2 million won, which fail to deter violations.
This incident follows a similar fatal fire in Wando six months ago, raising concerns that recent safety measures—intended to prioritize defensive suppression and real-time hazard communication—are not being effectively implemented on the ground. Experts are calling for enhanced command capabilities, the use of drones for internal reconnaissance, and increased manpower in rural and industrial regions to protect first responders.
