South Korean football faces Olympic preparation concerns
Following South Korea's victory at the Asian Games, concerns are rising regarding the development of the nation's Olympic-generation football players. While the U-23 squad secured a fourth consecutive Asian Games title, experts note that the focus on securing military exemptions through this tournament may have delayed the preparation of the Olympic squad.
Unlike rivals such as Japan and Uzbekistan, who began building their U-21 teams nearly two years ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics, South Korea's Olympic team only began training in June. The team faces a challenging path toward the 2028 Olympics, especially with the reduction of Asian qualifying slots from 3.5 to just 2.
Individual player trajectories also highlight the volatility of talent development in the region. Lee Seung-woo, once dubbed the ‘Korean Messi’ after joining Barcelona's academy at age 13, experienced a period of stagnation in Europe before finding success in the K League with Suwon FC and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Despite a recent return to the national team, his career serves as a case study of the pressures and setbacks faced by highly touted young prospects.
