South Korea reviews military exemptions for athletes after football controversy

South Korean authorities are reviewing the military service exemption system for athletes and artists following a public outcry. The controversy was triggered by insensitive remarks from members of the national men's football team after their gold medal win at the Asian Games. Players Lee Gi-hyuk and Yang Min-hyeok drew criticism for comments suggesting their primary motivation was securing military exemptions, while player Park Seung-su faced backlash for posting a photo wearing a military discharge cap.

The Ministry of National Defense has announced plans to include the reduction or potential abolition of these exemptions in its basic defense reform plan. Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choi Hwi-young also stated that the current system will inevitably be scaled back to address concerns regarding fairness and changing public perceptions of military service.

Data shows that over 80 percent of athletes receiving exemptions between 2022 and 2024 did so through Asian Games gold medals. In response to the incident, the Korea Football Association issued an apology and pledged to strengthen ethics education for athletes.
