South Korean Government Approves New Medical Schools at Sunchon and Gyeongguk Universities

The South Korean government has officially selected Sunchon National University and Gyeongguk National University to establish new medical schools. This decision aims to address regional healthcare disparities and strengthen essential medical services in underserved areas.

Sunchon National University has been allocated 60 student spots, while Gyeongguk National University will receive 40. Both institutions aim to begin admitting students by 2030. The government noted that the allocation reflects regional medical resource distribution and the capacity of each institution to manage initial enrollment.

In Gyeongbuk, the new medical school and a teaching hospital with over 500 beds are planned for the provincial government new city, with an estimated project cost of approximately 630 billion won. In the Jeonnam-Gwangju region, the selection of Sunchon National University follows a complex process involving failed merger negotiations between Sunchon and Mokpo National Universities. Despite challenges and calls for re-evaluation from Mokpo National University, the government concluded that the selection process for Sunchon National University contained no legal flaws significant enough to warrant rejection.

The government plans to review additional student quotas after 2032, based on future physician supply projections and the readiness of the new institutions.
