South Korea's President Lee pushes for OPCON transfer and nuclear submarines FAST-MOVING

During a cabinet meeting held on August 18, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung emphasized the need to strengthen independent defense capabilities and the US-South Korea alliance. He reaffirmed his commitment to completing the transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON) from the United States within his term, which is scheduled to end in 2030.

President Lee also called for accelerating the development of nuclear-powered submarines and instructed officials to proceed with the establishment of a unified Korea Military Academy to prepare for future hybrid warfare. He noted that South Korea is currently ranked as the 5th strongest military power globally.

Regarding the ongoing Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercises, the President clarified that they are defensive in nature, aimed at protecting citizens and safeguarding national security rather than intending to provoke or attack North Korea. Additionally, Lee urged political factions to move past partisan conflicts and cooperate on national interests, including economic growth and disaster preparedness.
