South Korean government nears decision on new national medical schools
The South Korean government is expected to announce decisions regarding the establishment of new national medical schools as early as January 8. This follows a recent court ruling that cleared legal hurdles for the selection process in the Jeonnam-Gwangju region.
The Gwangju District Court recently dismissed an application by Mokpo National University to suspend the effectiveness of the selection and recommendation of Sunchon National University as a candidate for a new national medical school. The court ruled that the recommendation did not constitute an administrative disposition subject to such a suspension and that Mokpo National University lacked the legal interest to contest it.
With this legal obstacle removed, the Ministry of Education can proceed with the next steps. The government is currently considering the allocation of 100 medical school seats between the Jeonnam-Gwangju and Gyeongbuk regions. One potential scenario involves splitting the seats equally, with 50 allocated to Sunchon National University and 50 to Gyeongbuk State's proposed medical school.
While Sunchon National University and local officials prepare for the upcoming Ministry of Education review, Mokpo National University has indicated it will review the court's decision to determine whether to file an immediate appeal and will continue its main lawsuit to challenge the fairness of the selection process.
