South Korea reviews multicultural family support programs over fairness concerns

The South Korean government and the Seoul metropolitan government have launched investigations into support programs for multicultural families following concerns regarding social equity and reverse discrimination.

President Lee Jae Myung initiated the review after questioning whether preferential treatment for multicultural households creates disadvantages for other citizens. The Ministry of Justice has requested that local municipalities report on their current support policies to determine if any programs result in discrimination against Korean families.

In Seoul, officials are inspecting 26 specific support programs. These include priority access to daycare centers regardless of income, preferential placement in postpartum care centers, and access to the ‘Seoul Learn’ online education service without standard income restrictions. Other programs under review involve real estate brokerage fee support and financial assistance for small business owners.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon stated that while investment in multicultural children is necessary to prevent future social costs, policies must be designed more precisely to ensure other citizens do not feel a sense of relative deprivation.
