South Korean hospitals expand specialized artificial joint revision services

South Korean medical institutions are expanding specialized services for artificial joint revision surgery to address the needs of an aging population. As the lifespan of initial implants reaches its limit, cases of wear, loosening, and infection are increasing, particularly among elderly patients with underlying conditions like diabetes and hypertension.

Yonsei Sarang Hospital has reported performing approximately 1,000 joint revision surgeries over the past decade. The hospital utilizes a multidisciplinary approach involving orthopedics, internal medicine, radiology, and anesthesiology to manage the complexities of bone loss and infection risks during the replacement process.

Similarly, Seoul Bumin Hospital has established a dedicated ‘Revision Center’ to focus on complex re-operations for the hip, knee, and shoulder. The center leverages surgical experience and robotic precision technology to assist patients who require secondary procedures due to complications or implant failure.
