South Korean household income rises 4.5% in Q2 2026

South Korean household income rose by 4.5% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, reaching an average of 5.295 million won per month. However, the growth was largely driven by a 27.6% surge in public transfer income, which included government relief funds for high oil prices. This surge helped reduce income inequality, with the quintile ratio of equivalized disposable income hitting a record low of 4.97.

Despite the nominal increase, real income grew by only 1.5% after adjusting for inflation. Real consumption expenditure also showed sluggishness, increasing by just 0.4%, a significant slowdown from the 3.1% growth seen in the first quarter.

Labor income remains a point of concern; while nominal labor income rose by 0.8%, real labor income fell by 2.1%, marking the largest decline in six years. In contrast, property income saw a substantial increase of 21.3%, suggesting that wealth gains from assets are outpacing earnings from employment.
