South Korean innovation cities discuss second phase of public institution relocation

Representatives from various innovation cities gathered at the National Assembly for a forum to discuss the successful implementation of the government’s second phase of public institution relocation. The forum aimed to prepare for the upcoming announcement regarding the movement of approximately 350 public institutions from the Seoul metropolitan area to regional hubs.

Government principles suggest that relocation will focus on existing innovation cities to maximize regional growth engines rather than distributing agencies randomly. This strategy aims to cluster related institutions to create synergy between research, industry, and public administration.

Daegu Dong-gu, represented by District Mayor Woo Seong-jin, emphasized attracting institutions in the advanced medical and bio sectors to leverage the region's existing medical R&D infrastructure. Other participating regions included Naju, Jinju, Wonju, and Jeonju, with leaders discussing how to improve living conditions to ensure the stable settlement of relocated employees.
