South Korea international flight passengers rise 10% amid shifting travel demand
South Korea saw a 9.8 percent increase in international flight passengers during the first eight months of the year, totaling approximately 68.44 million travelers. This growth occurred despite rising oil prices and increased fuel surcharges.
Demand has shifted toward shorter-haul destinations. Travelers to Japan increased by 20.3 percent, aided by the weak yen, while flights to China rose by 23 percent due to visa-free programs. Conversely, passenger numbers for Southeast Asian routes declined, with Vietnam falling 5.1 percent and the Philippines dropping 13.7 percent. Analysts suggest travelers are opting for shorter flight times to mitigate rising costs.
Incheon International Airport also experienced a 20.1 percent surge in transit passengers. This increase is attributed to shifts in global travel patterns caused by conflicts in the Middle East, which have redirected passengers traveling toward Europe and the Americas through South Korean hubs.
