South Korean labor unions call for gender equality policy enforcement

The Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) held a policy meeting to address the persistent gender wage gap in South Korea, which remains the highest among OECD member nations at 29.3% as of 2023.

Experts at the meeting emphasized that while female employment rates have risen, structural issues such as high proportions of female non-regular and part-time workers persist. A key recommendation was the swift legalization of the 'Employment Equality Disclosure System' to improve transparency.

Participants noted that the current legislative process is stalled in the National Assembly. They called for expanding the scope of disclosure to include more businesses and ensuring better coordination between the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Ministry of Employment and Labor to effectively implement gender-equal labor policies.
