South Korean labor unions prepare for strikes and votes

Labor unions in South Korea are moving toward industrial action following failed negotiations. In the Gyeonggi region, the Gyeonggi Regional Automobile Workers' Union is conducting a strike vote involving 9,369 members. The dispute centers on wage increases, shorter working hours, and improved welfare benefits across 29 bus companies. If a strike is approved, it could affect 4,130 vehicles and 854 routes, potentially causing significant commuting disruptions for residents.

Separately, the Korea Workers' Compensation & Welfare Service (COMWEL) union held a press conference at the National Assembly to demand better pay and increased staffing. The union highlighted a significant wage gap, noting that new employees at COMWEL earn substantially less than those at the National Health Insurance Service and the National Pension Service. Following the breakdown of wage negotiations, COMWEL unions are scheduled to hold a strike vote on October 27–28, marking the first such action in ten years.
