South Korean lawmaker criticizes economic disparity and interest rate burdens
During a National Assembly audit of the Bank of Korea, Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Tae-nyeon highlighted a growing gap between macroeconomic indicators and the lived reality of citizens. While the semiconductor industry is driving growth, Kim noted that export value increases have not translated into higher production or employment, as export volumes have actually decreased.
Kim expressed concern that interest rate hikes intended to curb real estate overheating in the Seoul metropolitan area are placing undue financial pressure on provincial economies, small business owners, and vulnerable populations. He pointed to declining private consumption, retail sales, and construction orders as evidence of a struggling domestic economy.
In response, Bank of Korea Governor Shin Hyun-song stated that the GDP gap remains near a threshold that could stimulate inflation, justifying the need to monitor the economy as a whole. He pledged to coordinate more closely with fiscal policy to ensure economic stability.
