South Korean lawmaker Jung Chung-rae shifts audit focus amid U.S. visa delay

South Korean lawmaker Jung Chung-rae of the Democratic Party has changed his parliamentary audit schedule from the Americas division to the Europe division following a delay in his U.S. visa issuance. Jung stated that his visa is officially still under review and that his decision to focus on European oversight was a practical choice due to flight schedules and holidays.

The delay has sparked political debate between South Korea's ruling and opposition parties. Members of the People Power Party suggested the delay might reflect a lack of trust in the current administration's security views or link to Jung's past anti-American activities. Conversely, the Democratic Party expressed regret, arguing that restricting a lawmaker's parliamentary duties is inconsistent with the values of an alliance.

The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is inappropriate to link an individual visa matter to the broader state of South Korea-U.S. relations. The Ministry noted that specific details regarding visa applications and review processes are kept confidential by U.S. authorities under domestic law.
