Ajou University Hospital pediatric emergency center faces medical staff resignations

The pediatric emergency medical community in South Korea is calling for strict limitations on police searches within critical care areas following a controversial search at Ajou University Hospital. The incident, which occurred during an investigation into the death of a four-month-old infant in July, led to several medical staff members, including the director of the pediatric emergency medical center, Lee Ji-sook, submitting their resignations.

Medical professionals, including representatives from the Korean Pediatric Emergency Medicine Society, held a press conference to demand the establishment of clear investigative guidelines. They argued that entering active treatment zones like emergency rooms, intensive care units, and delivery rooms causes extreme psychological distress to both staff and patients, potentially leading to defensive medicine. They noted that digital records and CCTV provide sufficient evidence for investigations without requiring physical intrusion into clinical spaces.

While high-ranking police officials visited the hospital to apologize for a lack of understanding regarding emergency medical environments, medical leaders stated they have not received satisfactory explanations regarding the unannounced execution of search warrants. The medical community is demanding that police release a draft of their investigative guidelines by late November, which should include mandatory consultation with medical experts and restrictions on searches in essential medical settings.
