South Korean lawmakers clash over 5·18 Gwangju movement laws and remarks

South Korean political tension is escalating over proposed legislative changes and controversial remarks regarding the 5·18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.

Representative Lee Jin-sook of the People Power Party has introduced several amendments to laws related to the 5·18 movement. These proposals include requiring the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to annually disclose the names of 5·18 merit recipients and their families, as well as defining the movement's scope geographically. The Democratic Party has condemned these moves as ‘vile politics’ and ‘secondary victimization,’ arguing that disclosing personal information could lead to targeted attacks on victims. They cite previous court rulings that protected such privacy to prevent social stigma.

Simultaneously, controversy has erupted following remarks by People Power Party Representative Kim Seung-soo, who referred to the movement as the ‘Gwangju Incident’ during a parliamentary audit. This terminology, historically used by the Chun Doo-hwan regime to characterize the movement as a riot, drew sharp criticism from the Rebuilding Korea Party, which demanded an apology for what they termed ‘historical distortion’ and ‘insult’ to the citizens of Gwangju.
