UN Command Commander sparks sovereignty controversy with DMZ remarks

Javier Brunson, Commander of the United Nations Command and ROK-US Combined Forces Command, has sparked controversy following remarks regarding South Korean territorial sovereignty. During a seminar in Washington, D.C., Brunson stated that from the perspective of the UN Command, the Republic of Korea begins at the southern fence line of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

He explained that because the UN Command manages that specific area to maintain the armistice, that is where the country starts. This statement has drawn sharp criticism from South Korean political leaders and military officials, who argue it undermines the nation's constitutional sovereignty over the territory within the DMZ.

The South Korean Ministry of National Defense characterized the remarks as Brunson's personal view, while the UN Command clarified that the comments were intended to explain the military and administrative responsibilities assigned to them under the Armistice Agreement, rather than to contest South Korean sovereignty.

Additionally, Brunson's comments regarding new standards for the transfer of wartime operational control have added to the tension. South Korean Army Chief of Staff Kim Kyu-ha expressed disagreement with the territorial remarks, and the South Korean government has reportedly conveyed its concerns to the United States.
