South Korean life insurers supply 6.2 trillion won to productive sectors
South Korean life insurance companies have supplied approximately 6.2 trillion won to productive financial sectors as of September this year. This figure exceeds the initial target of 3.6 trillion won by 37%, even when excluding 1.28 trillion won in residential real estate project financing (PF) investments.
According to the Life Insurance Association of Korea, the funds were primarily directed toward infrastructure, such as renewable energy and highways, which accounted for 42% of the total. Future advanced industries, including data centers and strategic industry fund bonds, represented 16%, while startups and ventures received 2%.
During a recent meeting, industry leaders and financial regulators discussed the need to rationalize asset management regulations to facilitate long-term investment in high-tech industries. Proposed improvements include expanding the scope of subsidiary investments, activating overseas bond lending, and increasing the use of derivatives for asset-liability management (ALM).
Financial authorities, including the Financial Services Commission and the Financial Supervisory Service, expressed willingness to review these regulatory improvements while emphasizing that such expansion must not compromise financial soundness or consumer protection.
