South Korean local governments expand youth support and participation initiatives

Various local governments in South Korea are implementing diverse initiatives to support youth development, employment, and civic participation.

In Gwangju Nam-gu, the ‘Youth Challenge Support Project’ is helping 84 young people improve their job-seeking capabilities through short, medium, and long-term educational programs. Participants have reported increased confidence and clearer career goals.

Gwangyang has launched its 4th Youth Policy Consultative Body, consisting of 42 members. This group will operate for two years, focusing on five key areas: participation and rights, jobs, housing, welfare/culture, and education to ensure youth voices are reflected in municipal administration.

In Yeoju, Vice Chairperson Jin Seon-hwa visited a youth training center to discuss welfare, safety, and career support, emphasizing that youth should be protagonists of policy rather than just subjects. Meanwhile, in Incheon Michuhol-gu, the ‘Ryus’ Youth Steering Committee held a meeting with center leadership to propose improvements to facilities and programs based on direct user feedback.
