South Korean local markets launch autumn festivals to boost commerce

Local governments and merchant associations in South Korea are launching various autumn festivals and night markets to revitalize traditional markets and alleyway commercial districts.

In Ulsan's Nam-gu district, four traditional markets—Ulsan Beon-gae, Suam, Sinjeong, and Ya-eum—are hosting events organized by merchants. These include weekly Wednesday night markets at Ulsan Beon-gae Market featuring various food menus, and the Sinjeong Sangga Market 'Happiness Festival & Nighttime Item Festival' scheduled for late October.

In Gwangju's Gwangsan-gu district, eight different alleyway commercial districts are participating in a series of programs running through November. Part of a project to develop desirable alleyway content, these events feature singing contests, flea markets, food trucks, and street performances. Specific upcoming events include the Cheomdan District Vitality Festival and the Via-dong 'Mak-tong' Festival, aimed at increasing the self-sufficiency and competitiveness of local businesses through resident and merchant participation.
