South Korean man arrested for 26-year illegal stay in Japan
Shizuoka Prefectural Police arrested a 72-year-old South Korean man in Yaizu on August 26, 2026, for residing illegally in Japan for over 26 years.
Investigators report that the man entered Japan in September 1993 using his brother's passport under a 15-day temporary visitor permit. Seeking better employment, he allegedly remained in the country after his permit expired, supporting himself through day labor.
While his total time in Japan spans nearly 33 years, authorities are focusing on the period from February 2000 onward due to reforms in immigration legislation. The investigation was initiated following a tip received in June 2026. The suspect has admitted to the allegations of illegal stay.
