South Korean man sentenced to prison for assaulting taxi driver

A 58-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for assaulting a taxi driver and damaging a vehicle in Donghae, Gangwon Province.

The incident occurred in November last year when the defendant, identified as A, refused to exit the vehicle after reaching his destination. Despite paying the fare, A demanded the 68-year-old driver, B, continue driving. When B protested and stopped the taxi, A punched him in the face and strangled him with both hands, causing injuries requiring approximately two weeks of medical treatment.

A also used a stone to smash the taxi's windshield, causing approximately 3 million won in damages, while the driver attempted to drive away to escape the assault.

The Seoul High Court Chuncheon Bench upheld the original sentence, rejecting the defendant's claim that the punishment was excessively harsh. The court noted the inherent danger of assaulting a driver, which can threaten the safety of pedestrians and other motorists, potentially leading to major traffic accidents.
