South Korean medical researchers present spinal surgery advancements
Medical professionals in South Korea have presented significant research findings regarding spinal surgery techniques at recent academic conferences.
At the 2026 Korean Society of Endoscopic Spine Surgery (KOSESS) regular academic conference, medical staff from Anyang Wills Memorial Hospital shared clinical expertise and research. Hospital Director Lee Dong-chan, who completed his term as the 8th president of KOSESS, led discussions as a chairperson. Additionally, Director Kwon Hee-chang presented a comparative analysis of endoscopic approaches for cervical partial pediculectomy and vertebral body resection, while Director Kim Hyun-woo introduced a video-based technique for controlling bone bleeding during surgery.
Separately, a research team led by Professors Cho Dae-jin and Bae Seong-soo from Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong received the Grand Prize at the 17th Korean Spinal Basic Research Society regular academic conference. Their award-winning study focuses on a new surgical strategy for complex spinal pathologies, such as ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) and ankylosing spondylitis. The research proposes a method of fusion and stabilization without direct neural decompression to minimize the risk of nerve damage and paralysis in high-risk patients, demonstrating clinical efficacy in improving symptoms for patients with progressive paralysis.
