The South Korean military fired warning shots last week after several North Korean soldiers crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the eastern front-line area of the Demilitarized Zone. The incident, which occurred during the early to mid-part of the week, marks the first time South Korean forces have responded with warning shots to an MDL crossing this year.

According to government sources, the North Korean soldiers were likely performing patrol duties when they crossed the boundary. Following the warning shots, the North Korean troops immediately returned to their side, and no further unusual activity has been reported in the area. This follows a period of increased border fortification by North Korea after Kim Jong Un declared inter-Korean relations as being between 'two hostile states' in late 2023.

In response to the ongoing tensions, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has called for renewed dialogue with Pyongyang to establish a permanent peace mechanism and replace the current armistice. Data indicates that North Korean troops violated the MDL 17 times throughout last year.
