South Korean military fires warning shots at North Korean soldiers

South Korean military personnel issued warning shots after several North Korean soldiers crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) on the eastern front this week. This marks the first time South Korean forces have used warning shots due to North Korean border crossings this year.

Following the warning shots, the North Korean soldiers retreated north of the line. Officials believe the soldiers were likely conducting patrol duties at the time. No further unusual activity was reported.

Since North Korea redefined its relationship with South Korea as a ‘hostile two-state relationship’ in late 2023, its military has been working to fortify the border with obstacles and defensive structures. While there were 17 such border violations recorded last year, the frequency has decreased in 2026, which analysts suggest may be due to the completion of these fortification projects.
