South Korean military leaders sentenced for martial law insurrection
The Seoul Central District Court has sentenced several high-ranking South Korean military officials to prison terms for their involvement in the December 3 martial law incident. The court found the defendants guilty of insurrection and abuse of power, stating that they betrayed the military's political neutrality to serve specific interests.
Yeo In-hyeong, former head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command, received an 18-year sentence. He was accused of organizing a team to arrest political figures, including opposition leader Lee Jae-myung. Lee Jin-woo, former commander of the Capital Defense Command, was sentenced to 15 years for mobilizing troops to block the National Assembly.
Other sentences included 12 years for former Intelligence Command head Moon Sang-ho, 10 years for former Army Chief of Staff Park An-su, and 9 years for former Special Warfare Commander Kwak Jong-geun. Kwak received a relatively lighter sentence due to his cooperation with the special prosecution investigation. The court revoked the bail for Lee, Park, and Kwak, ordering their immediate detention.
