South Korean military helicopter enters DMZ during wildfire mission

A South Korean military Surion helicopter accidentally crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) into North Korean territory while fighting wildfires in the Yeoncheon region on March 23.

An investigation by the Joint Chiefs of Staff revealed that the two pilots entered the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) after misidentifying their mission area while searching visually for the fire. The helicopter operated within North Korean airspace for a period before the intrusion was identified.

Command structures failed to detect the breach in real-time; the incident was only confirmed after the Air Force Central Mobile Control Center (MCRC) provided notification. The investigation cited inadequate information sharing between units and failures in tracking and control by the Ground Operations Command and the 1st and 5th Corps. As a result, the 1st and 5th Corps received warnings, and the Ground Operations Command received a caution. Disciplinary actions against the pilots are ongoing.
