Alaska LNG project sparks trade dispute between U.S. and South Korea

A diplomatic and economic dispute has emerged between the United States and South Korea regarding the Alaska LNG project. President Donald Trump announced that South Korea would invest over $50 billion in the massive energy development, which is estimated to cost between $45 billion and $54 billion. However, South Korean officials have clarified that the government is only reviewing the project and that any participation is strictly conditional on commercial viability and legal procedures.

In response to the disagreement, President Trump has threatened to double tariffs on South Korean exports if an agreement is not reached. South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan noted that while the project has historically lacked economic feasibility, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has increased its strategic value by complicating traditional LNG supply routes.

The project involves constructing a roughly 1,300-kilometer pipeline to transport gas from Alaska's North Slope to export terminals. While the U.S. administration is pushing for the investment to secure energy infrastructure, Seoul maintains that no binding financial commitment has been signed.
