South Korean Ministry promotes low-carbon certified livestock products

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs held a campaign at the Government Complex Sejong to promote the consumption of low-carbon certified livestock products. The event featured tastings of low-carbon certified milk and lattes, with participation from government employees and local nursery students.

To qualify for low-carbon certification, farms must implement at least one carbon reduction technology—such as manure treatment, low-methane feed, or renewable energy use—and emit at least 10% less greenhouse gas than the species average. Additionally, farms must hold at least one of seven existing certifications, including HACCP, organic, or animal welfare.

The number of certified farms has grown significantly, from 53 in 2023 to 580 currently. Following the initial introduction for Hanwoo beef, the certification scope expanded to include pork and dairy in 2024. The ministry plans to select 362 more farms for certification this September. Low-carbon certified products are currently available through school and military meals, department stores, large marts, and online channels.
